A lot of things can change in 18 years, but the love I have for you has not.
I believe it is safe to say that, without a doubt, you have shaped me into the person I am today. Without you, I have no clue who I would be, or what I would be doing. So many of the opportunities, lessons and passions in my life have completely stemmed from you.
You have taught me the greatest lessons a person can learn. You've taught me how to lose (gracefully), how to learn from failure, how to be patient, how to be kind to others, how to handle everything with grace and dignity and most importantly, you have taught me how to love.
Friends oft come and go, but you have always and will always be by my side. You listen to my troubles and comfort and console me. For this, you are my best friend. When I need a shoulder to cry on, I can always count on you. You always know when something is wrong, and how to bring a smile to my face. I can tell you all of my secrets, and you'll never tell a soul.
When you came into my life 18 years ago, I hardly knew the influence you would have on my life. You've filled my summers with horse shows and long hot days of fun. You taught me how to be responsible, and to care for something else. You've put up with the ridiculous costumes we put on you, with my frustrations, with the thousands of pictures I make you pose for, and for all of the mistakes I have too often blamed on you. When I make mistakes, you try your best to correct them.
Thank you for making me more confident. I am a shy person, but when I am around you, I could hardly be more outgoing. I could talk about you day and night- of your accomplishments, of your funny stories, of your kindness. You have given me the courage to step outside of my comfort zone, to ask for opportunities like attending Rolex, or being sponsored by wonderful companies.
When I see little girls pet you nose and giggle with joy, or see you lay your head on the bed of a patient in a hospital, I cannot help but be teary eyed. You are more kind, more loving, and more gentle than most people. You do not pass judgement, you only give your love. You can sense who needs it the most. I know that, if you can bring someone else even a fraction of the joy you have brought to me, their life has been improved at least a little. I wish that every person could have something in their lives to love and inspire them like you have done for me.
It my be difficult for some to understand the relationship between a girl and her horse. You are not just an animal- you aren't even a pet. You are so much more. You are better than a brother, better than a friend, better than any dog or cat to walk the earth. The bond and connection between a girl and her horse is unexplainable, and unmatched. Until you have had a "heart horse", you simply cannot understand. Even thinking of being without you is enough to send me to tears. You have taught me more than I will ever know, and I cherish every moment I spend with you.
Thank you for being my best friend.
Your "girl"- Sarah
